Business Information:
Palliser Downs on Hwy #62 started in 2003 as U-pick/direct sales strawberry operation, using the standard format and product. We have since then moved to a better product (high flavonoid strawberries: St Laurent, Harmony, St Pierre) which has a better shelf life (3-5 days table). Strawberries are grown on raised mulched beds. Three acres available for u-pick in 2012. In 2011 we added sweet tart cherries (lowbush Romance series, haskaps and saskatoons). There will be cherries available for u-pick starting 2012. Haskaps most likely 2013 and saskatoons the year after. There will be an organized and documented tour of the farm in August 2012 followed by a PowerPoint Presentation on the economics and practice of growing low bush tart cherries. Since 2003 we have been involved in research in the feasibility of growing hardy varieties of fruits in colder climate zones. Inn 2011 that resulted in the first wine production with Frontenac grapes, followed by Marquette (red) and St Pepin(white) in 2013. We are at present researching clone improvements with haskap, with some really promising varieties on the horizon but it will take till take 2016 before we know whether this will pan out. The tart cherries will be available to the general public in 2014. We expect a production of around 18,000 lbs for the season. We hope to be able to offer processing for third parties by the middle of 2015. IQF, washing, drying, dehydrating. Information on the website PalliserGroup/agriculture
